Apartment building camera placement
Apartment Building Security Camera Placement Checklist NYC
A camera system is only useful when the views match the building's real risk points. Use this checklist to plan lobby, entrance, package room, hallway, stairwell, basement, garage, roof, and exterior door coverage before requesting an estimate.

Start With the Building Map
Before choosing camera models, list every entrance, shared room, door, stairwell, elevator bank, delivery path, basement area, garage entry, and exterior blind spot. The best camera plan follows how residents, visitors, vendors, supers, delivery drivers, and unauthorized visitors actually move through the property.
For apartment buildings, we usually recommend professional wired IP or PoE cameras connected to an NVR with enough storage, clean cable labels, secure remote viewing, and documented access for owners or managers.
Camera Placement Checklist by Area
Each building is different, but these are the locations we review on most NYC apartment building assessments.
Front entrance
Capture faces and direction of travel at the main entry, vestibule, buzzer area, and exterior sidewalk approach where practical.
Lobby and mail area
Cover mailboxes, elevator waiting areas, lobby doors, and visitor paths without aiming into private units or unnecessary private areas.
Package room
Use angles that show who entered, where packages were placed, which shelves or lockers were used, and who removed items.
Hallways and stairwells
Place cameras where they show movement through shared areas and access points instead of long blank wall views.
Basement and roof access
Review utility rooms, storage areas, laundry rooms, roof doors, and service corridors that may need access documentation.
Garage and exterior doors
Plan for lighting, weather, vehicle movement, side doors, rear exits, trash areas, and pedestrian entry points.
Questions to Answer Before Installation
- How many days of recording does the building need?
- Who can view live cameras and playback?
- Do package room, intercom, or access control areas need integration?
- Are any cameras outdoor-rated or low-light models?
- Can existing wiring be reused or does the system need new PoE cabling?
- Will each camera be named clearly for future service?

Camera Placement FAQs
Common planning questions from NYC building owners and property managers.
Where should security cameras be installed in an NYC apartment building?
Common camera locations include the front entrance, vestibule, lobby, mail area, package room, elevators, hallways, stairwells, basement, roof access, garage, laundry room, trash area, side doors, and rear exits.
How many cameras does an apartment building need?
The camera count depends on the number of entrances, floors, shared rooms, garages, exterior doors, and blind spots. A site assessment is the best way to determine the right count.
Should apartment building cameras be wired?
For most apartment buildings, wired PoE cameras are preferred because they are more reliable, easier to manage, and better suited for common areas than consumer wireless cameras.
Can cameras cover package rooms and mail areas?
Yes. Package rooms and mail areas are common camera locations because they help property managers review deliveries, pickups, missing packages, and lobby activity.
